Well, of course there are those who like the "glitz" that Apple products give them. It's like a status symbol.
Like their LV bags and so on are to them. These folks are being labelled as Apple "fanboys" (or "fangirls"), but no, they're not. They might as well buy other expensive gadgets (like a DSLR) that they don't really need. They have $$$, after all. And some of these same people are mad that their 6-month-old iPad 3 is now obsolete. Hello, it's still a great device! But yeah, suddenly, people with an iPad 4 look prettier than you, don't they? Well now, that's the real issue, no? Oh, how cruel the world (or Apple) is.
If you're a real Apple fanboy, you know that the iPad 3 is still great. So yeah, if you waited 6 months, you could have something better. But hey, that happens. Just go wait for the iPad 5. or 6. It's all good.
In that sense, if you're buying Apple stuff just for the status symbol, and hate that you have to shell out more $$$ just to get the greatest and latest (even if the current one is still great), the iPad mini is probably not for you. But hey, it's your money. I'm just saying - there are a ton more serious problems in the world. You're already donating to charity? Donate to a few more.
Also, if you think $329 is too much, an iPad mini is not for you. Move on. It's okay. You probably don't need it, too. Go get yourself a Nexus 7 for $200 or a Kindle Fire for just $160.
Seriously now, I know someone who has a Mac mini (desktop) connected to two 19" monitors, an 11.6" MacBook Air, and an iPhone 4 with a 3.5" screen. He never felt the need for an iPad - the regular one with a 9.7" screen. But now... He did some math. Midway between 11.6" and 3.5" is just a little over 7.5". And so there he goes. Now, an iPad mini seems to be just right. Maybe Apple thought of it, or maybe not, but it might be one more reason why they didn't feel the need to go 7.0" and a sub-$300 device to "compete." The iPad mini size feels just right.
It's even better if he had iPhone 5 with a 4" screen. Midway between 11.6" and 4" is 7.8". Just about the iPad mini size. Go figure.
But, who cares about math, right?
