Google tracks you. Here's an alternative search engine.

First, check out this website: http://donttrack.us/
And this: http://dontbubble.us/

Then learn about online "filter bubble" concept introduced in this TED Talk:

And finally, go and search using DuckDuckGo. To change your default search engine to DuckDuckGo on Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Explorer, follow the instructions on this website. For Safari instructions, just go to Preferences / Settings and go look for "Default search engine."

You can also do other kinds of Google-like super search functions:

  • "!amazon green day" for example searches amazon for "green day." There are other "!bang" kinds of searches.
  • calculations (try "40+40x0+1" or "sqrt(9)" or "average 1 3 5 19")
  • unit and currency conversions
  • weather, sunrise/sunset times
  • and many more!

One caveat: it feels a little slower than Google right now. I think it's because of two things: they're not yet as big as Google so as to provide the same speeds, and well they're showing you everything and not necessarily just the results you expect. They're also querying other servers like Wolfram Alpha.

Of course they don't have voice and picture search unlike Google, but you can always visit Google.com for that if you really need it.

Also, my question is how can DuckDuckGo sustain itself as a business? Get bought out by Apple? Or Yahoo!? But Yahoo! needs the "marketing" information so, I don't really know if it's a good fit.

What do you guys think?
